Weather in Madeira: What can you expect?
If you travel in winter, Madeira welcomes you with average temperatures from 16°C to 19°C, the weather is ideal for enjoying the outdoors without the rigors of the European winter. In the summer months, during our visit at the end of June, we enjoyed exceptional weather. With an average of 27ºC, sunny days and perfect temperatures for the beach, while in the mountains, temperatures remain cool throughout the year.
Don't forget to take a look at this article if you are planning to camp in Madeira. Note that most of the camping sites on the island are located in the mountainous part of the island, as well as some of the numerous hiking trails, so bring some warm clothing.
-7 days Getting around the Island: Airport and Car Rental
The Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (Funchal airport) is the main gateway to Madeira. Once on the island, renting a car is the most flexible and convenient way to get around. This way you can decide what to see in Madeira at your own pace. In our case we rented it directly upon arrival in Funchal. We opted for this option and were able to camp in different parts of the island, which allowed us to enjoy a unique experience. Approximately we spent 380 euros in total through DiscoverCars for the whole week. Including insurance.

Travel to Madeira in August vs. Winter: Prices and Advantages
August is the peak month for tourism in Madeira, which means more crowds and higher prices. For those who prefer peace and tranquility, the winter offers the island in its most serene state.
Personally, I recommend end of June to enjoy all you have to see in Madeira. When the weather is optimal and the island is not yet crowded with tourists. We were able to quietly enjoy all the activities, although the most popular places on the island are always going to be congested with tourists no matter what time of year you travel to Madeira.

What to do in Madeira in One Week
If you have a week, like us, you can plot a complete tour of the island. It starts with the cultural wonders of Funchal and continues with the formations of the São Vicente Caves. Reserve time for the hiking trails along the levadas. Don't forget to include a visit to the volcanic pools of Porto Moniz.
Day 1: Funchal
- Explore the capital, Funchal. Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores, the Botanical Garden, and enjoy a stroll through the Zona Velha.
Day 2: Cabo Girão and Câmara de Lobos
- Visit the spectacular viewpoint of Cabo Girão and then head to the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos.
Day 3: Porto Moniz and the North Coast
- Travel to Porto Moniz to enjoy its famous natural pools. On the way, pass through Sao Vicente and its caves.
Day 4: Santana and Madeira Peaks
- Head to Santana to see the traditional houses and then explore the island's peaks, such as Pico Ruivo or Pico do Areeiro.
Day 5: Levadas and Laurisilva Forests
- Dedicate this day to walk along one of the famous levadas, such as Levada do Rei or Levada das 25 Fontes.
Day 6: Ponta de São Lourenço
- Explore the Ponta de São Lourenço nature reserve, known for its breathtaking views and rock formations.
Day 7: Relax in Funchal
- Spend the last day relaxing in Funchal. Enjoy a last walk around the city, visit a Madeira wine cellar or enjoy the beach.

It is best to stay in Funchal upon arrival on the island for at least one day. Here is a selection of the best hotels in Funchal.

- Hotel Orquidea: This was the hotel where I stayed on my first day in Madeira, it has a 24-hour reception, it is the best value for money hotel. The rooms are cozy and have a balcony, and the included breakfast is very good.
- Alexia Room: It is a bed&breakfast that offers accommodation with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a terrace with sea views.
- Palmar Rooms: Located in the center of Funchal, it offers well-equipped accommodation with free WiFi, less than 1 km from Almirante Reis Beach and a 9-minute walk from Funchal Marina.

Madeira's natural pools and beaches will be a highlight of your trip. Created by volcanic lava, they are a spectacle of nature. With a week in Madeira, there is plenty of time to see them all:

Madeira can blend to all budgets. You can find budget options in hostels and enjoy the local cuisine at reasonable prices, perfect for those looking for something to do in Madeira without spending too much. For a more luxurious experience, there are also more premium hotels and gourmet restaurants are a perfect choice. In our case, we did a low cost trip that cost us around 450 € per person, including flights from Lisbon.
