Algarve Beaches Near Lagos Old Town
Praia Meia
Praia Meia is one of the largest and least explored beach in the Algarve. This was my favorite place to watch the sunrise when I lived in Lagos. The photos were taken with my drone.
Accessibility: It is an easily accessible beach. To get there it is necessary to cross the pier bridge from Lagos. If you go by car, you will enjoy the ample parking available. If you prefer public transportation, there are bus options from different points in the region, making your arrival easier.
Characteristics:
- Length: With approximately 5 kilometers in length, this beach is one of the longest in the Algarve. It is perfect for walking, hiking or yoga at sunrise.
- Tourist Influx: Although Meia Praia is a popular beach in Lagos, you will notice that it tends to be less crowded than others in the region because of its size. It is located in the heart of Lagos, and it is perfect if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Services: The beach offers sun loungers and umbrellas for rent. In addition, along the beach there are several restaurants and bars, where you can try everything from local dishes to international options. If you are into water sports, there are specific areas for activities such as kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Batata Beach
Praia da Batata is a popular beach in Lagos among tourists and locals alike. Often referred to as the "city beach".

Nudism in Lagos Beaches
In Lagos, nudism is tolerated on some beaches although they are not officially nudist. The Portuguese Federation of Nudism (FPN) recommends the following beaches beaches of Bordeira, Beliche, Zavial, Furnas and Cabanas Velhas on the Costa Vicentina.
Also recommended are the beaches of Canavial and Pinheiros in Lagos for the practice of nudism.
Beaches near Lagos in Algarve
Praia do Cordoama and Castelejo
These two beaches are located in the town of Vila do Bispo. They are ideal for a hike or to take some surfing lessons. I have a whole article talking about Castelejo beach here.
Boca do Rio Beach
It is also located in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, is a quiet non-touristy beach. The beach, of medium size and about 150 meters long. It is surrounded by cliffs and the landscape is practically virgin.
An interesting aspect of Praia da Boca do Rio is the presence of Roman ruins and the remains of a 19th century fish canning factory. In addition, part of the beach is formed by rocks.
The name of the beach translates as "beach of the river mouth" due to the mouth of the Ribeira de Budens river on the east side of the beach. Following the river inland, otters and cows can be observed.
To reach Praia da Boca do Rio, you can walk along the cliffs from the village of Salema in about 25 minutes. By car, the trip from Burgau takes 10 minutes and from Sagres about 20 minutes. Follow the N125 road, exiting at Budens and continuing towards the sea for about three kilometers.
My experience in Lagos Beaches
During my month living in Lagos, I had the privilege of visiting most of the beaches in Lagos. Each has its unique charm, but a few stood out especially for me. For sunrises, there is nothing like Praia da Batata and Meia Praia.
However, when it came to escaping the tourists and really enjoying the beach, Praia da Balança became my favorite. The combination of its natural setting, less saturated with visitors, and proximity to the town's amenities made it a perfect choice for quiet beach days.
