What is Harderkulm and why is it so special?
Harderkulm is a viewpoint located at 1,322 meters above sea level.Known for offering an incredible view of Interlaken, nestled between the Thun and Brienz lakes, it is also the gateway to more demanding trails such as the route to Augstmatthorn. What makes it really special is the contrast between the blue of the lakes and the green of the mountains, crowned by the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, including the famous Jungfrau.

It is the ideal place if you are looking for a nature experience without going too far from the city. Although getting to the top can involve a demanding hike, there is also the option of taking the funicular to Harderkulm, which is the fast and comfortable way, the one I personally chose.

How to get to Harderkulm: On foot or by funicular?
There are two main ways to reach the summit of HarderkulmBy foot or by funicular. Both options have their advantages, depending on your physical condition and the type of experience you are looking for.
Option 1: Trail to Harderkulm
If you enjoy hiking and are in the mood for an outdoor adventure, you can choose to hike to the summit. The route starts in Interlaken and, although it is a steep climb, it is rewarded with beautiful scenery as you enter the forest. The trail is well signposted and, depending on your pace, can take between 2 and 3 hours. The advantage is that you can enjoy nature and save the cost of the funicular, but the disadvantage is that it requires very good physical shape, as the incline is considerable. Here is a link for you to see the route to harderkulm in alltrails and see for yourself the difficulty and elevation gain.

Option 2: Funicular to Harderkulm
On the other hand, if you prefer a faster and more comfortable option, you can take the Harderkulm funicular.that takes you to the top in only 10 minutes. This was my choice, as I found the hike quite demanding and preferred to reserve energy to enjoy the viewpoint and the rest of the day in Interlaken. However, important advice if you decide to take the funicular is to arrive early, especially in high season.. The funicular usually fills up quickly and queues form, so it is advisable to go early if you are in a hurry or plan to make the hike to Augstmatthorn afterwards.
Book your tickets in advance through GetYourGuide, since the price is exactly the same as at the station and you make sure you don't lose your place, and by the way, you help me to continue with my adventures! Here's a link so you can book your entrance to the Harderkulm funicular railway.
How to book the funicular?
If like me you prefer to take the funicular for a more relaxed experience, it is best to book your tickets online before your trip. I used GetYourGuide, which allowed me to avoid the long lines that usually form, plus the price is the same and the return ticket is included as it is an open ticket. If, on the other hand, you prefer to do it in person, there is also this option at the station, there are automatic machines and a small office. Here is the direct link so you can book your ticket to the Harderkulm funicular railway.

Tips to make the most of your visit
Best time to visit
Harderkulm can be visited all year round, but the best time is between the months of May and October, when the weather is more pleasant and the views are usually clear. If you prefer to avoid crowds, I recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun sets over the lakes and mountains, creating a magical atmosphere.

Wear appropriate clothing
Although the funicular ride is short, the temperature at the top can be cooler than in town, so don't forget to bring a light jacket, even in summer, especially if you decide to go in the afternoon. If you decide to make the hike, be sure to bring comfortable shoes and water, as the climb can be challenging.
Enjoy the views from the Skywalk
Once at the top, you can't miss the famous panoramic platform called "Skywalk". This wood and steel structure stretches along the edge of the observation deck and offers a direct view of the Interlaken Valley and the surrounding lakes. From there, you can take breathtaking photos and contemplate the magnitude of the landscape - definitely one of the highlights of the visit!

Harder Kulm Panorama Restaurant
After enjoying the views, an excellent option is to relax in Harderkulm's panoramic restaurant. When I visited, I was surprised that the prices were not as high as I expected for such a touristy place. Sure, the prices are typical Swiss, a bit more expensive than normal, but the quality of the food was really good. The menu offers local dishes such as fondue and other alpine delicacies, perfect for refueling after the hike or the funicular ride.

The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace which, on clear days, is the perfect place to enjoy a meal with unforgettable views. If you plan to eat there, I recommend booking a table in advance, as it can fill up quickly, especially in high season.
Route to Augstmatthorn from Harderkulm
For the more adventurous, Harderkulm is not only a viewpoint, but the starting point to the famous Augstmatthorn peak. This route is quite demanding and I only recommend it to those who are used to mountain trails. The hike takes you along the mountain ridge with spectacular views of the Alps and lakes, but be aware that it can take 6-7 hours to complete (in the best cases). There are several ways to start the hike, I have a whole article talking about the augstmatthorn and all of them here.

If you plan to do this route, I suggest you start early and be well prepared, as weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly. Also, be sure to bring enough water and snacks, because there are not many facilities along the way.
My Harderkulm Experience: Is it worth a visit?
The short answer is yes. Harderkulm is one of those places that encapsulates the best of Suiza: dreamlike scenery, activities for all levels and a unique connection with nature. Whether you choose to walk to the top or take the funicular, the experience is worth it. Personally, I think taking the funicular was an excellent decision, as it allowed me to save time and energy to enjoy the viewpoint and restaurant at my leisure. Plus, the views from the skywalk and restaurant are a reward in themselves.
If you are planning a trip to Interlaken, you can't miss the opportunity to visit Harderkulm. I hope this guide has been useful and will encourage you to discover this magical place!
