The Beaches of Baleal: Two Sandbanks Separating the Island from the Continent

Baleal is a peninsula connected to the continent by two beachesThe island is divided by a series of islands that offer different options to enjoy the sea. The beach to the north (Baleal Norte)the smaller one is known for the shallower and calmer waterswhich makes it a place where ideal for swimming and learning to surf if you are just starting out in the sport. On the other hand, the beach to the south (Baleal Sul) is famous for its surfing conditions, since it is tends to have larger waves and more varied breakersideal for surfers of all levels.

During my stay, I visited both beaches almost daily. I was there between late September and early October. It is a time of the year when the weather varies between sunny and somewhat cloudy days, but the atmosphere is calm and the beaches are not crowded. In addition, I easily found parking in the public parking lot located at the beginning of the island, which is a great advantage compared to the summer months, when the area is full of tourists.

Surfing in Baleal: Waves for All Levels

Baleal is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Portugal, and for good reason. The waves in Baleal are small to intermediate sized at this time of year, perfect if you're looking to improve your technique. Each day, the conditions varied a bit, but I always found perfect waves for my intermediate level. The cold water was not a problem with a good wetsuit, right there before arriving you can rent the material in any store you find at a standard price, the wetsuit usually costs about 10 euros per day and the board about 20 euros.

If you are interested in surf in Peniche and its surfcampsYou'll find ideal options whether you're a beginner or a more advanced surfer. Peniche is famous for its surf schools and accommodations dedicated to surfers, so it's easy to make friends and find good places to stay near Baleal, in particular I was staying in the village of Ferrelin Ahoy surf house about 10 minutes by bike and about 3 minutes by car from the island of Baleal.

The Weather in Baleal: Best Season to Visit

One of the reasons I loved visiting Baleal in late September and early October is the weather. Unlike the summer months, when temperatures can be very high and the beaches are crowded with tourists, in the fall the weather is milder and less crowded. The days alternated between sun and clouds, which was perfect for my surfing days.

Although the water was a bit chilly, I enjoyed the waves without the summer crowds, which made the experience more authentic and relaxing. Also, this is an ideal time to surf, as the conditions tend to be more stable and the waves consistent.

Las Casas Blancas and the Charm of the island

One of the most picturesque aspects of Baleal is its cluster of traditional-style white houses that stretch along the peninsula. These simple, whitewashed, red-roofed houses give the island a Mediterranean flair that is very photogenic. Most of these houses are destined for tourism and function as lodgings or restaurants, but still retain the authentic atmosphere of a fishing village.

From the top of the peninsula, the views are spectacular, and the contrast between the white houses and the blue sea creates a really special atmosphere, especially at sunset.

Restaurant in Baleal Sul Bar do Bruno

On the main beach of Baleal, you will find a restaurant named Bar do Bruno in front of the sea where you can enjoy a meal or a drink after a day of surfing. This is my favorite because they also do cocktails and there is usually a lot of atmosphere. The menu is based on fresh produce, with options of fish, seafood and typical Portuguese dishes and sometimes there is live music. The restaurant is located next to the Baleal parking lot and is perfect for a break between surf sessions and have a snack.

Transportation in Baleal: Bike or Car?

To move between Ferrel, where I was staying, and Baleal, I decided to rent a bicycle for 40 euros per week. Although it was a fun experience, I realized that renting a car would have been a more practical option. A bike is ideal for short distances, but a car gives you more freedom to explore other nearby destinations, such as Nazaré or the town of Óbidos.

If you prefer to rent a car as I did after my first week, you can do it easily and book it in advance at DiscoverCarsthe platform I use to find the best prices. Having a car allows you to save time and move around more comfortably, especially if you plan to visit other beaches or towns in the region.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

  1. Off-season visit: In late September and early October, the beaches are quieter, the weather is mild and you can still enjoy good surfing conditions.
  2. Bring a good wetsuit: The water in Baleal is cold even in summer, so a wetsuit is essential if you plan to surf.
  3. Explore the area: Ferrel is an excellent base of operations, with good value for money and close to other points of interest such as Almagreira beach and other places to see in Peniche and surroundings as the iconic Supertubos beach.
  4. Reserve your lodging in advance: Baleal's popularity means that accommodations fill up fast. You can find options ranging from budget hostels to beach houses at accommodation in Peniche, Ferrel and the area.

How to Get to Baleal and Getting Around the Area

From Lisbon, you can take a bus to Peniche for 5 euros and then an uber to take you to Baleal, this is the option I took when I arrived by plane. But to be honest, it is best to rent a car upon arrival at the airport. If you plan to surf and explore the area, renting a car will save your life. This allows you to move from one beach to another with freedom and without relying on public transport, which is also very limited in low season. Car rental in Portugal is usually affordable, especially in low season. I recommend you compare prices and consider this option to make the most of your visit.

If you decide to stay at Ferrel, you will have easy access to Baleal by bike or car. In addition, you can visit nearby beaches such as Almagreira, which offers more consistent and less crowded waves, as well as being an incredible natural park.

Conclusion: An Ideal Destination for Surfers and Ocean Lovers

The island of Baleal is a perfect place if you are looking to surf, relax and connect with nature. Its calm atmosphere, waves and white houses make this corner of Portugal a destination that does not disappoint. My experience here was amazing, and the combination of good weather, good waves and relaxed atmosphere made my stay unforgettable. Also the locals are very friendly and you won't find it hard to make friends. Having an accommodation like Ahoy surfhouse also helped, as Riki, the owner of the house is always willing to answer any questions.
