Peniche is a coastal town in the central region of Portugal. known for its surfing beaches and its relaxed atmosphere.. However, although I visited this destination for the surfing, it has much more to offer: history, monuments and natural landscapes make it a place full of surprises. In my case, although I stayed in Ferrel, I took the opportunity to visit Peniche frequently during the two weeks I was in the area, especially cycling around the village.

Peniche has a unique history that encompasses from Roman times to more recent times. Its strategic location on the coast made it an important defensive point, especially during the Middle Ages and in the twentieth century, when it was used as a prison for political prisoners.

The Peniche Fortress is one of the most representative monuments of the city. Built in the 16th century to protect the coast, this fortress was reused during the Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal as a political prison. Today, houses a museum that tells the story of the Portuguese resistance and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.. This was one of my first stops, it is worth visiting, especially for the viewpoint at the end of the fortress from which you can see the infinite ocean.

In the heart of the old town of Peniche is located the São Pedro Churcha jewel of baroque architecture. When I visited the interior I noticed that it was decorated with golden details, wood carvings and typical Portuguese tiles, which create an atmosphere of serenity. This is a quiet place to appreciate the religious art and learn about the cultural legacy of the city.

In addition to the beaches, Peniche has breathtaking natural landscapes and biodiversity that make this area a perfect attraction if you enjoy nature.

The Berlengas IslandsThe archipelago, located a few kilometers off the coast of Peniche, is a natural reserve well known for its crystal clear waters, ideal for diving and snorkeling. The archipelago has steep cliffs and unique flora. The main attraction is the fortress of São João Baptista, a fortification in the middle of the sea that can be visited on daily excursions from Peniche.

Located in the extreme western part of the peninsula, the Cape Carvoeiro offers spectacular views of the cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean. This point is famous for its rock formations, shaped by wind and sea over centuries. In addition, from here you can see the Berlengas Islands in the distance, which adds a special touch to the landscape.

The Ilhéu da Papôa is a place to see in Peniche, located near Cape Carvoeiro. This islet, connected to the coast by a narrow passage, is characterized by its steep rock formations. In addition to the breathtaking views, it is a perfect place if you enjoy photography and capturing the Portuguese coast.

The beaches of Peniche are famous all over the world.Not only for its ideal waves for surfing, but also for its golden sand and relaxed atmosphere. If you are a surfer or just want to relax, these beaches are the perfect place. The beach of Supertubes is known as one of the best surfing spots in Europe, famous for its powerful tubular waves. This beach hosts a stop on the world surfing circuit and is ideal if you are an experienced surfer.It is also perfect to enjoy watching people surfing as was our case. In addition, the beach has a small restaurant at the entrance where you can order food or drinks.

Baleal is the perfect beach for all levels of surfers, offering medium-sized waves and a relaxed atmosphere. For me, Baleal was a daily visitor spot, as it is close to Ferrel, where I stayed. Almagreira is a wilder and less crowded beach of Peniche, located in a natural park that transports you to an environment almost from another planet. It is a beach surrounded by nature, perfect if you are looking for a quieter atmosphere and less predictable waves.

Peniche also stands out for its cultural offer, which allows you to learn more about the identity of the region.

The Peniche Museumlocated in the fortress, is a must-see if you want to learn about the history of the region and the life of the inhabitants over the centuries. The museum's collection ranges from objects from Roman times to contemporary items that tell the story of the political prison.

Admission is about 8 euros and the schedule is as follows:

• Tuesday to Sunday: 10:00 - 18:00 (last entry at 17:15)
• Closed on Mondays.

During my stay in Ferrel, I used to go to Peniche to do my shopping, as it is the place where the main stores and supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl are located. If you are staying in the surrounding area, Peniche is the best place to stock up.

In addition, you can't miss the municipal marketwhere you will find everything from fresh produce to handicrafts and other things to see in Peniche. This market is a good opportunity to experience the local culture and take home a bit of the Peniche spirit.

In addition to surfing and beaches, there are more outdoor things to see in Peniche that allow you to explore its natural environment and enjoy the adventure.

Peniche has bike routes that allow you to tour the coast and discover its landscapes. Renting a bike is a good option to move around the city and nearby areas. In my case, I used to cycle around Peniche, enjoying its sea views and the local atmosphere.

Getting around Peniche and the surrounding area is easy with a rental car, which also provides quick access to supermarkets and nearby towns such as Ferrel. You can book one through DiscoverCars to explore at your own pace and without relying on public transportation. Although I also tried biking, the car turned out to be more convenient for shopping and moving between beaches quickly and comfortably.

If you only have one day to see Peniche, here is a complete itinerary of what I would do to make the most of your visit and get to know its main attractions:

• Peniche Fortress
  Start the day exploring the Peniche Fortress and spend about half an hour to visit the museum and enjoy the view of the sea from its walls.
• São Pedro Church
  Head to the center of Peniche and visit the São Pedro ChurchIts tile decoration and wood carvings will transport you to a bygone era. Take the opportunity to take a short walk through the old town.

• Cabo Carvoeiro and Ilhéu da Papôa
  In mid-morning, go to the Cape Carvoeiro to contemplate the Atlantic Ocean and the unique rock formations that surround it. Then, stop at the Ilhéu da PapôaA fascinating place for its rugged landscapes and spectacular views. This is an ideal place to take some pictures and enjoy the fresh air.

• Supertubos or Baleal beach
  You cannot leave Peniche without visiting one of its beaches. Depending on your preference, choose between Supertubes to see surfers in action on one of Europe's most popular waves, or Baleal if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere for swimming and walking along the coast. Here you can take a break, and if you prefer, have lunch at one of the beach bars such as Xakra Beach Bar.
