Midigama, Sri Lanka's West Coast Surfing Paradise

The first time I heard about Midigama was during my visit to Colombo to renew my visa in Sri Lanka. After entering the immigration building, I bumped into two Germans who pictured Midigama to me as a surfing paradise still unexplored by mass tourism.

Until then all my experiences on the beaches of Sri Lanka had been in the most well known places such as Mirissa and Weligama. I didn't hesitate for a second, and right after renewing my visa, I made my way there. I headed to Midigama looking for a more intimate, authentic and relaxed experience.

Without a doubt it was my favorite beach even though it only has a couple of streets. In Midigama I found the quiet atmosphere I was looking for, lots of surf, cheap prices and I also met amazing people.

What to do and see in Midigama

The truth is that there is not much to do beyond surfing, relaxing on the beach, meeting people and eating healthy and cheap. The essence of Midigama, what really hooks you is that you have everything close by.

It is surrounded by beaches, and if you want some more activity you just have to take a bus for 50 LKR (about 20 cents) and get to one of them. But don't worry, if you are looking for a party, you can also find it and I will tell you where.

📲 If your carrier does not include internet, you can buy a SIM card upon arrival in Sri Lanka, but I recommend something even more convenient: Prepare a Holafly eSIM with discount before your trip. You can book now with the code "MIRADASNOMADAS"and get a 5% discount. This way, you will have unlimited internet from the moment you land. It is perfect for short stay trips between one and two weeks, here you can read my experience using Holafly's eSIM in Switzerland.

Lazy left and Lazy right

These are the two most famous surf spots in Midigama, located right at the entrance to the village.

Lazy Left is known to be a more challenging left-hand breaker and provides long, gentle waves over a shallow reef, suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, especially with a good swell. It is possible to obtain rides of up to 500 meters.

On the other hand, Lazy Right offers a fairly similar configuration, being a surfing point that works best at low tide and is longboard friendly.

Visit Ahangama

The small town Ahangama it's found about 10 minutes by bus. It is the place you go when you want something more active, also if you want to buy something in the supermarket, since there is none in Midigama.

Let's say Ahangama is the main town and Midigama would be like a village nearby. You will also find numerous surf spots and surfshops and souvenirs. In addition to this, the main beach of Ahangama is spectacular as you can see in the photo.

Party at Lazies Midigama

It seems unbelievable, but yes, one of the best parties on the west coast of Sri Lanka takes place in Midigama. Every Tuesday locals and tourists from all over the southwest beaches gather at the Surfing Wombats hostel to attend the Open Mic session until 11 pm. Right after this warm up the real party comes. All the people move from the Open Mic to Lazies Midigama, a 3-storey building right at the entrance of the village. The entrance fee will cost you about 1000 LKR, which you will quickly amortize with a couple of dances upon arrival.

Probably, the best techno you are going to hear in the whole island, resident DJs from the best clubs in Europe come to play there. I was lucky enough to go one night and without a doubt it was the best party I had in Sri Lanka. If you are thinking of going to Lazies and you don't know anyone, I recommend you to go to Surfing Wombats, it is a good place to socialize before the party starts.

Plan your visit to Midigama

There are a few things you need to know before visiting Midigama. In this section I am going to give you some recommendations on restaurants, accommodations and transportation to make your experience an exceptional one.

Where to Stay: Accommodation

Purely by chance, I ended up staying at Surfing Wombats, a hostel managed by two Estonian girls, and Justin, a British guy. As soon as I arrived they personally welcomed me and showed the facilities of the hostel. There is free drinking water, wifi (although not very good) and all the amenities that a hostel can have. The rooms are super comfortable with individual fans.

The curious thing about this hostel is that its main business is its restaurant. Their Italian restaurant attracts locals and tourists from all over Midigama and nearby beaches. It is somewhat expensive, but functions as a meeting point for many. In addition, you will be able to exchange money at the hostel with fair exchange rate, you'll just have to ask Justin.

Top 3 Accommodations in Midigama

  • Surfing Wombats: The most atmospheric hostel in Midigama, the best owners and the best pizza in Sri Lanka.
  • Lost Planet: A very peculiar hostel inspired by science fiction movies, I did not have the opportunity to stay here, but I met a couple of people who spoke very well of it.
  • Funky Sol Midigama: Hostel located 10 minutes walk from Midigama with sea views on the seafront.

Recommended Restaurants

Two of my favorite restaurants in Sri Lanka are located in Midigama, here I will tell you what they are.

Café Pleasures

Just a minute from the entrance to Midigama you will find Café Pleasures. A local food restaurant run by a local family. For about 3 euros you will be able to enjoy a good curry dish, and for 1.5 euros more you will have a good fruit juice.

This is the restaurant I recommend if you are staying in Midigama and don't want to move around too much. The quality of the food is good, with breakfast and plenty of variety.

Leo's Restaurant

Café Pleasures is very good, but Leo's is my favorite, it's about a 7 minute walk from Midigama. The quantities are more than decent and also For ordering curry they give you vanilla ice cream with caramel. Yes, you read that right, you get an ice cream for free.

This time too, the restaurant is run by a superfriendly local family and the prices are very cheap.

How to get to Midigama

If you are heading to the southwest of Sri Lanka from Colombo, the best option will be to take a bus on the highway from the Makumbura Multimodal Center station. Once you arrive at the station you will have to ask for the bus to Galle.

Make sure you get on the Highway Bus, if you make a mistake it may take much longer than expected.

Bus on the way to ahangama

Once in Galle you will simply take the local bus in front of the bus station on the way to Midigama. Total duration of these two buses from Colombo is usually between 2.5 and 3 hours.

Where to go after visiting Midigama

After staying at Midigama, you can always go one step further and explore to the south the somewhat more touristy beaches of Weligama and Mirissa. These beaches are well known by any tourist, in any case they are undoubtedly a must stop.

Also save a couple of days to visit Hiriketiya, the last beach that is very worth visiting before starting your trip north to Ella or doing the famous Safari in Yala National Park.

In case you are heading from Midigama to Colombo, don't forget to stop for a couple of days in Unawatuna, the last beach that is most worth it before your arrival in the capital.

My experience at Midigama

You already have read me throughout the post, I am in love with this place, the vibes, the people, the food. It was a wonderful experience discovering Midigama in my last days before departing to Maldives.

Although it is true that I would have liked to spend more time here, 4 days were enough to realize the good energy that the place transmit.

I would recommend 100% a stop in Midigama on your trip in the south of Sri Lanka. But be careful if you travel to Sri Lanka for a couple of weeks, the magnetism of this village can easily catch you with its very particular atmosphere.
