Activities and things to do in Weligama

The main attraction of Weligama is undoubtedly the surf and party. You can find a temple or two around town, but the best thing about Weligama is the surfing atmosphere.

Surfing at Weligama Beach

Surfing in Weligama is ideal for beginners thanks to the smooth and consistent waves. Weligama Bay is a huge crescent of sand protected from the waves, which guarantees perfect surfing conditions. Not only beginners enjoy the waves here; the bay also offers breaks suitable for intermediate surfers, making it a versatile place to practice the sport.

Surfing at weligama beach

My time in Weligama during the dry season in Sri Lanka was a success, I was able to find waves every day of the week.

Surf schools abound along the beach , where you can easily rent boards and instructors. Just to give you an idea, the rental of a surfboard is around 1 euro and a half per hour, perhaps a euro more expensive if you are looking for a more professional board.

Many tourists opt to join surf camps for a week or two, although it is also possible to simply rent a board and try it on your own. The surfing community is welcoming, which adds a positive experience for those who are learning, something that does not happen ofteny.

The surf season on the southern coast, which includes Weligama, is officially taking place from October to March. During this period, you will find the best waves. However, it is possible to surf in Weligama throughout the year. If you decide to visit during the low season, from April to September, you will find fewer crowds and lower prices.

Although it can get crowded, especially during the high season, the beach offers space for everyone. In my case I never had a problem surfing at any time of the day.

Visit the beaches near Weligama

One thing I love about Weligama is that once you settle in you will have everything at hand. Let's say that Weligama is halfway to the rest of the beaches in the southwest of Sri Lanka. In addition, all these beaches have some characteristic that makes them unique and special, so if I were you I would reserve some time to visit them all:

Ahangama Beach

This beach is my favorite for surfing, it has incredible waves for intermediate and advanced levels. In addition, the atmosphere of coffee shops and modern surf and souvenir shops make Ahangama a perfect destination to entertain yourself and meet people without the need to go out and party. This beach is located about 25 minutes from Weligama, read my full article on Ahangama here.

Mirissa Beach

Mirissa is a city more popular with tourists, it is somewhat larger than the rest of the beaches and has numerous restaurants and spots to visit. Among them are the famous coconut tree hill (an esplanade full of coconut trees overlooking the sea) and parrot rock. As for surfing, it is not the best option, but it also has a couple of good places for intermediate levels. It is a must-see, and it is also located next to Weligama.

Midigama Beach

This was my favorite place to settle in the south of the island with the aim of surfing. Midigama is located about 15 minutes by tuk tuk from Weligama, and what makes this place unique are its laid-back vibes, affordable prices, and spectacular surfing beaches. I have a whole article talking about Midigama, the lazy right and lazy left beaches and more photos I took of this magical place.

Unawatuna Beach

This beach is one of my favorites to relax. It is an area with many resorts and luxury tourism, although there are also hostels around. In Unawatuna is the famous swing that you see in all the photos of Sri Lanka, and you can also swim and find turtles easily on its beaches. Read my Complete guide to Unawatuna by clicking here.

Hirikatiya Beach

Hirikatiya is located a few hours from Weligama, yet a visit to this magical place is totally necessary. It is an ideal bay for surfing and people looking for a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time with quality restaurants and a good atmosphere. read my full article on Hirikatiya by clicking here.

Local Cuisine: Restaurants in Weligama

Weligama, despite its popularity among surfers and tourists, has higher prices compared to other places in Sri Lanka. However, there are options that stand out for their quality and fair prices.

Miru Restaurant is the place to go if you are looking for authentic local food at a good price. It offers a genuine experience of Sri Lankan cuisine, being the best option to enjoy local flavors without spending too much.

Land of Rizka restaurant in Weligama

For the lovers of hamburgers, Foodcave Weligama is a must stop. It combines quality with affordable prices, ideal for those looking for an international touch to their palate.

If your plan includes going out at night, Land of Rizka stays open until 4 am, offering burgers and a variety of dishes at affordable prices. It is an excellent option to end the night with good food and atmosphere.

How to get to Weligama

There are several ways to get to Weligama, it all depends on your departing point. Most likely you will be heading to Weligama from Colombo, Ella or any of the southwestern beaches.

How to get to Weligama from Colombo

If you are heading to the southwest of Sri Lanka from Colombo The best option will be to take a bus on the highway from the Makumbura Multimodal Center station. Once you arrive at the station you will have to ask for the bus to Galle.

Galle is a city in the southwest of Sri Lanka near Weligama. Make sure you get on the Highway Bus, if you make a mistake the journey time may be much longer than expected.

Once in Galle you will simply take the local bus in front of the bus station on the way to Weligama. Total duration of these two buses from Colombo is usually between 2.5 and 3 hours.

How to get to Weligama from Ella or any other beach

In case of making the trip from Ella, things get more complicated, in this case there is no highway and the roads are less well maintained.

You will have to take a local bus from Ella to Wellawaya. Once there you will ask for the bus to the city of Matara in the south of Sri Lanka and when you get there you will have to get on a local bus to reach Wligama. The journey will take you approximately a whopping 6 hours.

To save you all this hassle you can always book an uber or ask for a cab, but the cost will be higher, around 60 euros. If you are going to take this option, I recommend you to look for someone to share expenses with, it will not be complicated.

When you arrive to Weligama, the best way to get around the beaches it is to get on a local bus for about 50 SLR.

My experience visiting Weligama

My experience in Weligama was defined by the surf and the peace that surrounds this destination. The extension of its beach ensures space for everyone, creating a perfect environment for both beginners and those looking to improve their surfing.

Buddah on Weligama Beach

Together with my friend, we rented boards at the same place for the whole week, which allowed us to connect with the locals. Their hospitality and the relaxed vibe of the town enriched our stay.

In our case we already knew that our goal was to enjoy surfing, but I wouldn't recommend Weligama if you are looking for something more cultural. In that case there are better options within the country such as Kandy, Ella or Colombo.
