When I decided to explore Thailand beyond the beaches and temples, Khao Sok National Park became a must stop on my itinerary. Located in the south of Thailand, in the province of Surat Thani, Khao Sok is home to one of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world. From the Cheow Lake, which in my point of view has a similar aesthetic to the Ha-Long Bay in Vietnam being much more touristy, to the caves and wildlife, this park is a hidden treasure full of experiences and activities to do in Thailand.

In this guide I will tell you how to get to Khao Sok, what activities await you, where to stay and everything you need to know to enjoy this unique destination.
How to get to Khao Sok?
The Location of Khao Sok
Situated between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of ThailandKhao Sok has a strategic position that facilitates the access from other popular tourist destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Surat Thani. This makes it a very good option to combine a jungle and beach trip. Personally, I loved the idea of enjoying the deep nature of the jungle after spending a few days on the Thai coast.

Transportation and Getting There Options
Getting to Khao Sok was easier than I expected, although there are various routes and forms of transportation to suit every budget and preference:
- From PhuketIn some three and a half hours you arrive at Khao Sokpassing through mountainous landscapes and small Thai villages. The price of these shared transfers is about 400 baht (approximately 11 €).
- From Surat ThaniIf you are traveling from Surat Thani, you can take a local bus that will take you to takes approximately two and a half hours and costs between 200 and 300 baht (6-9€). This is the cheapest option and also offers good views of the landscape.
- From KrabiBuses from Krabi are another alternative, taking about three hours. The price of the bus ticket is around 350-450 baht (11€).
- From Bangkok: The most practical option is to fly from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then take ground transportation.. Another alternative is to travel by train or night bus from Bangkok to Surat Thani, this is the option I chose, as it was my second destination since my arrival in Thailand and had a cost of about 25€.
🚌 If you're traveling in Asia and want to get around without hassle, 12Go is the best option to book bus, train and ferry tickets.. It works in almost every country in Southeast Asia, comparing routes, schedules and prices on a single platform. I have used it on several occasions and it has always been the most efficient way to secure a seat without having to go to stations or negotiate at ticket offices. In addition, you can see reviews from other travelers and pay online without stress or risk of being scammed. I leave you the link here for you to try.
Traveler's Tip: Book Early in High Seasons
During the high season (November through February), the park fills up with tourists, and the shuttles are likely to sell out quickly. I booked my shuttle in advance, especially since I wanted to make sure I arrived in time for a tour of the lake. Also, I recommend carrying sufficient cashMany stores in Khao Sok do not accept credit cards.
Discovering Cheow Lan Lake: The Jewel of Khao Sok
One of the biggest attractions of Khao Sok is the Cheow Lan Laketo see it in person surpasses any photograph. This artificial lake, created in 1982 to generate hydroelectric energyThe lake is a landscape of turquoise waters and mountains emerging from the jungle. For me, sailing on the lake was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my trip, as it brought back memories of one of my favorite movies, Avatar.

Cheow Lan Lake Activities
Boat Tour
My first day at the lake began with a boat tour that I booked right at the park entrance. This tour, which cost about 1500 baht (approximately 45 USD), took me to explore the caves, cliffs and rock formations that rise majestically above the water. One of the highlights was a stop for a swim in the lake.
Floating Houses: Sleeping on Water
Overnight stay in one of the houseboats is an experience that I recommend 100%. When you sleep here, you wake up to birdsong and an otherworldly view of the lake. Houseboat prices vary depending on the level of comfort, although options usually range from 150€ to 400€ per night.

I I opted for an intermediate optionwhere I could enjoy a private room and a terrace overlooking the lake.. Although they don't have all the modern conveniences, the setting absolutely makes up for it. In addition, most of these houseboats offer kayaks to explore the lake at your own pace.
In any case, if you are looking for the most economical option, there are also very good accommodations in town, which I will tell you about in one of the sections of this article later on.
Kayaking on the Lake
One of my favorite activities was explore the lake on my own by kayak. During the tour, I could see exotic birds and some fish jumping near the kayak, a reminder of the rich biodiversity of Khao Sok. The kayak is usually included in the price of the accommodation. if you choose to spend the night on the Cheow Lake houseboats
Tips for Cheow Lan Lake
- Wear waterproof sunscreenThe sun reflects strongly on the lake, so it is essential to protect yourself well.
- Enjoy the disconnectionMost houseboats do not have constant electricity and internet. Take advantage of this opportunity to disconnect.

Trekking Routes in Khao Sok
Hike to the Cascades
One of the most highly recommended tours is the hike to the Sip Et Chan waterfall. During the trip, which lasts about two hours, you pass through several bird watching points and areas with fascinating flora. Arriving at the waterfall, I was able to take a refreshing dip in the natural pool. Entrance to the park costs 300 baht (approximately 9 USD) and is valid for 24 hours, which allows you to walk several trails.

Nam Talu Cave: Adventure for the Brave
If you are more adventurous, Nam Talu Cave is an incredible experience, although it requires some effort. It can only be visited during the dry season (December to April).During the rains the cave floods and becomes dangerous. The tour includes climbing and hiking inside a system of limestone caverns. To enter, a guide is required.
Night Safari in the Jungle
Exploring the jungle at night is a radical change. The park organizes night safaris in which a local guide takes you on dark trails, revealing the nocturnal life of the jungle. From small mammals to snakes and nocturnal birds, the diversity of species that are active at night is impressive. The night tour costs around 40€.

Fauna and Flora in Khao Sok
One of the reasons why Khao Sok is so special is its incredible biodiversity. This park is home to exotic species of flora and fauna that are hardly found elsewhere in the world. During my stay, I was able to see impressive animals and plants that I had not seen before.
Featured Species
The Rafflesia Flower: The Largest in the World
One of the most fascinating plants of Khao Sok is the Rafflesia, which is considered the largest flower in the worldreaching up to one meter in diameter. Although it only flowers

Grows only for a few days and at specific times of the yearI was lucky enough to see a Rafflesia in full bloom. This event is rare and difficult to predict, so many times local guides are the best option to know where and when to look for it. The flower has a strong and peculiar odor that attracts insects. and is one of the great attractions of the park.
Gibbons and other primates
During the walks along the trails of Khao Sok, it was impossible not to hear the calls of the gibbonsa sound that echoes throughout the jungle. Seeing them in their natural habitat, hanging from the branches with their long arms, was an incredible experience. I was also able to observe other primates such as macaques and langurs, who move quickly through the trees.
Elephants, tapirs and Malayan bears
Although rare to see, Khao Sok is home to a population of wild elephants, as well as tapirs and Malayan bears. These animals are elusive and tend to avoid humans, so I wasn't lucky enough to spot them, but knowing that they inhabit the park adds a layer of magic and mysticism to Khao Sok. If you have the opportunity to go on a guided safari, local experts can point out the tracks of these animals and help you better understand the ecosystem.
