Koh Tao enjoys a tropical climate with a long dry season and a shorter monsoon season. I have a very good memory of my dives, especially the night dive where we found a giant grouper in the dark, however, in general terms I think it is an overfished business on the island and most of the coral, but unfortunately it is dead. You can see the white color of the coral, an indication of the environmental deterioration that the island is suffering.

If you prefer something more relaxed or don't want to do a full course, the snorkel on Koh Tao is spectacular. Shark Bay (Thian Og Bay) is one of the best places to see green turtles and blacktip sharksespecially during the last hours of the day. Don't worry: these sharks are harmless, but remember to respect marine life and not to touch them.

In addition to Shark Bay, there are other bays perfect for snorkeling:

• Ao Leuk (Aow Leuk). Its turquoise waters and fine sand make many consider it the most beautiful beach on the island. The entrance fee is 100 baht and includes deck chairs, umbrellas, a non-alcoholic beverage, restrooms, showers and wifi.
• Tanote BayMy favorite, ideal if you prefer rocky landscapes and vegetation; here I used to practice freediving (amnea) and jump from the huge rock in the middle of the bay.
• Sai Daeng Beachnext to Tanote Bay, offers spectacular views of Shark Island and great snorkeling opportunities. Although the descent is a bit steep, it is well worth it.

Excursion to Koh Nang Yuan

Just 20 minutes by boat from Koh Tao you will find Koh Nang YuanIt is an islet formed by three small hills joined by a sandbank. It is famous for the views from its viewpoint, which can be reached by climbing a few meters. 200 steps. The waters surrounding Koh Nang Yuan are ideal for snorkeling; you will see schools of fish, corals and, with some luck, reef sharks. Viewpoints and hiking in Koh Tao

Koh Tao is not only beach and diving. If you like to hike, the viewpoints offer you incredible panoramic views of the island. Here are some of the most outstanding:

• John-Suwan Viewpoint. For me, the most spectacular viewpoint of Koh Tao. It is located next to Freedom Beachand offers a 360-degree view of Chalok Bay and Shark Bay. You have to climb between rocks and ropes, but it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. The entrance fee is 100 baht and includes access to the resort's pool and beach. I recommend wearing sports shoes and avoid going up at sunset if you don't have a flashlight.
• Love Koh Tao. Located in the center of the island, this viewpoint-bar has spectacular views of Tanote Bay. The entrance fee is 20 baht and it is discounted if you consume something. You can get there by motorcycle from Mae Haad in about 15 minutes. Tip: if you have no driving experience, leave the motorcycle at the entrance and walk up.
• Mango Viewpoint. At the northern end of the island, this viewpoint is reached after a 15-20 minute hike. The entrance fee is 100 baht and includes a drink. From there you can see Sairee Beach and the northern area.
• Coconut Viewpoint. Another of my favorites, also to the north, has views of the west coast and a spectacular sunset. The ascent is a 15 - 20 minute hill; entrance costs 10 baht and includes a bottle of water.
• West Coast Viewpoint. Located in the center of the island, it requires a 1.5 km walk, but the reward is unique views of Sairee Beach. The entrance fee is 100 baht with beverage included.
• Sun Suwan 360° View. To the south, this viewpoint offers views of Chalok and Shark Bay. The entrance fee is 50 baht and they offer you a discount on drinks. It is a good place to watch the sunset.

The viewpoints usually have steep paths; bring water, comfortable shoes and pay in cash. Some of them allow you to enter for free if you drink at the bar or if you access from the beach.

Beaches to relax

In addition to the snorkeling bays, Koh Tao has beaches where you can lie down to read, practice yoga or just watch life go by:

• Sairee Beach is the longest and most popular beach on the island, the heart of the nightlife. It is perfect for swimming and enjoying spectacular sunsets. In the late afternoon you will find bars with live music and fire shows.
• Mae Haad is the beach where the port is located; it is quiet, perfect to have a coffee and watch the boats passing by.
• Chalok Baan Kao Bay is the third largest beach. It has shallow waters, so it is not the best for snorkeling, but it is the best place to relax and enjoy a fruit smoothie.
• Freedom Beach is a small beach with shady trees. Near it begins the trail to the John-Suwan lookout. Entrance is included with your ticket to the lookout or by paying at the resort.
• Banana RockIt is my favorite place to watch the sunset and end the day with a beer. T

Nightlife and partying in Koh Tao

Although it is small, Koh Tao offers a vibrant nightlife ranging from laid-back bars to techno parties and jungle raves:

• Maya Beach Club. Perfect for a cocktail at sunset. It has modern decoration, comfortable sofas and DJ sessions at sunset.
• Fishbowl Beach Bar. If you are looking to party, this is your place. It has live music, DJs, happy hour and a young atmosphere.
• Lotus Beach Bar. With fire dancers and beanbags on the sand, it starts off quiet and turns into a party after dark.
• LEO Evolution Club. The only proper club on the island; it combines barbecue at sunset with DJ music until late.
• The Local. If you like pubs with activities, here you will find trivia, karaoke or bingo nights.
• Choppers Bar & Grill. Australian style pub in Sairee with sporting events, live music and DJ.
• Queens Cabaret. A show of drag queen that you can't miss; performances are every night at 21:30.

In addition, there are special parties:

• Secret PartyA jungle rave near Tanote Bay with two stages, fire, body painting and free cabs from the 7-Eleven.
• Jungle Partymonthly party near the pier, known for its giant sound systems and neon paint.
• Escobarjungle party five minutes by scooter from Sairee. There are five stages and fire shows. This is undoubtedly the most popular of the island.

To enjoy the night without mishaps, drink in moderation, take care of your belongings and respect the locals and the environment. In high season it is advisable to book accommodation in Sairee or Chalok in advance.

Adventure, sports and wellness activities

Koh Tao also offers alternatives if you are looking for other types of leisure such as adrenaline or relaxation:

• Climbing and rappel. In the area of Tanote Bay and other parts of the island you will find rock walls perfect for climbing.
• Kayaking, paddle surfing and wakeboarding. Many beaches rent boards and kayaks to ride along the coast. Paddle surfing at sunset in front of Banana Rock is an incredible experience.
• Thai cooking classes. Several schools teach how to prepare dishes such as the pad thai or the green currya fun activity for a cloudy day.
• Welfare. After so many activities, a Thai massage in one of the island's spas will leave you feeling like new.
• Freediving and yoga. During my last stay, I met a yoga teacher, Oum, at the Sai Daeng Resort. She introduced me to the freediving (amnea) and we spent several days practicing breathing techniques, photographing fish and watching sunsets. How to get around Koh Tao

The most common way to get around is renting a motorcycle for some 150 - 200 baht per day. However, the roads have steep slopes and, even if they are paved, they are not recommended if you are not experienced. Take pictures of the scooter before renting it and avoid leaving your passport as a guarantee; better leave a deposit. In my case, I rented a scooter upon arrival at the port and in less than an hour I could cross the entire island; this freedom allows you to explore hidden beaches, buy fresh fruit and visit hidden places.

If you don't drive, there are cabs, songthaews (shared pick-ups) and long-tail boats. For excursions to more remote beaches you can hire speed boat tours.

Useful tips and safety

• Areas where to stay. The best areas are Sairee Beach if you are looking for nightlife and Chalok Baan Kao if you prefer tranquility. Book early in high season.
• Documentation and money. Withdraw cash at ATMs and use commission-free cards such as N26. Exchange money at official exchange offices and keep your passport in a safe place.
• Safety at the wheel. Drive with a helmet and check your motorcycle before leaving. If you are inexperienced, hire a cab or a 4×4 tour.
• Travel insurance. Don't forget to take out insurance with diving and water sports coverage.
• Health. Drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and repellent. Avoid alcohol before diving and do not fly until 18 hours after diving.
• Respect for the environment. Do not touch the corals or disturb the animals. Take your garbage with you and avoid plastic bottles on Koh Nang Yuan.

My personal experience in Koh Tao

During my stay in Thailand I visited Koh Tao twice. The first was to get my advance, but I was so hooked that I went back a couple of weeks later. I was surprised at how easy it was to get around the island: by renting a motorcycle you can reach any point in less than an hour.and in a few days I knew the routes by heart. Every morning I bought fresh fruit at the market, sat down to write in my journal by the sea and then went out to explore new beaches with friends. On my second trip I met Ouma local yoga teacher who used to work in the Sai Daeng Resort. She taught me the basics of freediving and spent several days freediving in crystal clear waters. Koh Tao not only gave me incredible memories, but also a sense of community: there were always friendly people to share a massage, a beer, a party or an impromptu adventure.
