I'm going to share my experience surfing in Algarve, a welcoming region with amazing beaches. From beginners to professionals, there are waves of all kinds. In this article I will tell you how to make the most of your getaway to the south of Portugal.

When does the Surf Season begins in Algarve?
The surf season in the Algarve varies according to weather and oceanic conditions . Generally and in my experience, the best months for surfing are from September through April.
While the summer brings with it softer swells and waves ideal for those who are just starting out, is in October when the ocean really comes alive. Experienced surfers seek this month for its consistent groundswells and wave sets, without the excessive force of the summer trade winds.
Although it is possible to surf almost all year round, It is important to keep an eye on the wave and wind forecasts to find the ideal moment. The Algarve is a different place, depending on the season and weather conditions, it offers a unique experience for every surfer.

Where to Surf in Algarve?
There are many spots along the coast for surfing in Algarve. I would say the best spots start from Sagres and the west coast.
Map Surfing beaches in Algarve
Here is a map of all the spots you can find in the area.

Surfing in Cordoama and Castelejo
Cordoama and Castelejo are two neighboring beaches surrounded by cliffs located in Vila do Bispo. This spot is one of my favorites not only because of the surf, but for the wild atmosphere. It is ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers, although there are also lessons for beginners in the area.

The best surfing conditions here take place with northwesterly swell and southeasterly winds, and the beach works well on all tides. However, be careful with the rocky areas, especially at low tide.

Surfing in Arrifana
This beach is known for being one of the most consistent peaks in all of Europe. Arrifana has two main types of waves: the beach break, which offers hollow waves from both right and left, and a reef break, which can generate bigger and more powerful waves.

The best swell direction for this beach is from the northwest.
Surfing in Beliche
Beliche is famous for its fast, hollow left wave, which works best at medium tide. It is a wind-sheltered beach, which often results in cleaner, more shapely waves. The best surfing conditions at Beliche occur when the wind blows from a southeasterly direction.
Surfing in Amoreira
Amoreira is known for being a fairly consistent beach and point break. The beach break here offers both right and left hand waves. The best wind direction for surfing at Amoreira is from the east, while the best swell comes from the west.
Surfing in Tonel
Tonel is known for being a powerful beach break. The waves here are known for being fast and hollow, specially at low tide, making it ideal for intermediate and advanced surfers. It is also very popular with tourists. In my opinion it is not the best beach for surfing, especially if you go from April to September.

Praia Meia and Praia da Luz
In these two beaches located on the south coast you can only surf from October to April. I would say they are not the best, the waves are not very consistent. But if you are a beginner it is not a bad option. They are also next to Lagos, I recommend stopping in the area and make the route by Pornta da Piedade.

Surf Schools in Algarve
Here is a selection of surf schools that you can find in the area. It will help you if you are a beginner or if you are looking to rent a board.
- Algarve Surf School & CampOne of the oldest and most popular surf schools in the Algarve, operating for over 25 years. It offers group and private lessons for all levels, surf camp packages throughout the year, and accommodation in a hostel in Sagres..
- The Surf Experience: Established in 1992, it offers a wide range of experiences, including surf lessons, surf camps, surf guides, and premium surf coaching. It is located in Lagos.
- Arrifana Surf School and CampWith more than 13 years of experience teaching people of all levels in the Algarve. It is located near the beach of Arrifana.

My Surfing Experience in Algarve
During my month-long stay in Lagos, I experienced part of the essence of surfing in the Algarve. I explored the beaches I have already mentioned, which look like a canvas of nature. However, July presented me with an unexpected challenge: the winds were very strong. This prevented me from fully enjoying the waves.
I found out from the locals that the good surf in Algarve is in October. When the winds calm and the waves reach their fullness.

The beaches I liked the most were Castelejo and Cordoama. Arrifana, less known by tourists, It is also an incredible spot. This experience taught me that the Algarve is a destination where you can almost always surf, but the summer months are not the best months if you are looking to get the most out of it.
Touring the Algarve in search of waves requires one essential thing: a car. Public transportation here is very bad in terms of schedules and limited routes. If you are planning your surfing adventure, consider the freedom a vehicle gives you to explore these beaches.
