What can't you miss while camping in Madeira?

There are things you can't miss on your packing list for camping in Madeira. These are 4 essential items that I used at all times and helped me live my adventure in the country with less headaches:

  • Luggage organizers: These bags serve to divide and organize your luggage efficiently, both for backpacks and suitcases. Without a doubt, they are a must-have item on my trips.
  • USB rechargeable headlamp: Probably the most important item on this list. A headlamp will save you on many occasions of having to light up at night with the flashlight of your cell phone and not seeing anything around you.
  • Reusable water bottle: Carry a reusable water bottle is NON-NEGOTIABLE. I recommend that you do not skimp on expenses, it is a long term investment and you will use it continuously, especially when you go camping. Make sure it is resistant and keeps the temperature well.
  • Power bank or external battery: An essential item if you go camping, all camping sites in Madeira are in nature and therefore you will not find plugs anywhere.

My camping experience in Madeira

If you are traveling for a short period of time, this is the ideal choice. Almost all areas camping are in the mountains or far away from towns and cities, this will make you move around most of the time with the car. In any case, it was a good choice on our part, save money and enjoy nature like a child.

On the other hand, you must choose wisely where you will camp in Madeira. Some areas have drinkable water and toilets, while others are in the middle of nowhere. This can make all a difference in your experience.

Practical Tips for a Safe and Responsible Camping Trip

  1. Proper Equipment Selection: Make sure to bring camping gear suitable for Madeira's climate and terrain. This includes a tent, sleeping bags suitable for nighttime temperatures and durable hiking shoes. Keep in mind that although Madeira is a tropical paradise, it is still cold at night in the mountains and the weather is very changeable.
  2. Respect for Local Flora and Fauna: Madeira is known for its unique biodiversity. Avoid disturbing wildlife and keep your distance from wild animals. Also, do not collect plants or flowers from the site.
  3. Waste Management: Take all garbage and waste with you, and use recycling facilities if available.

  1. Thanks for the information.
    One question please.
Does a campsite such as poiso or everyone who needs prior permission allow me to take a small dog with me?
    Thank you

    1. Hello Lada!
Yes, pets are allowed without any problem. In addition, all camping areas are open-air and very spacious.
As for the permit, normally there is no one guarding or asking for it at the entrance, but it is important to apply in case there is any control.
For example, at the Poiso campsite you won't find anyone, maybe a few people camping, but there is only the camping table and a flat plain to set up your tent.
Thank you very much for your comment, tell me if you have any other questions and I will answer you without problem 🙂

It is possible to camp only for one night in a campsite that is already full according to the date (although the place offers certainly more space, for example Fanal camp – only 5 tents…), it is more a question of whether someone solves it ? I suppose it's mainly the license that's important, not the day of stay / reservation.

    Thank you

    1. Hey Jaro! To be honest I do not think you will face any problem, during our stay we were not asked for the permit at any moment and there was no one around. It is always good to apply just in case. Anyway, if I were you and check I have space to camp and not disturb the environment or anyone around, I would just do it.

Thanks for the comment! Enjoy your time in Madeira, It is a magical island you will fall in love with 😁

      1. Hi hello!
        A question.
The camping in Porto Moniz has the tents and camping staff to rent or I have to bring everything with me?

    1. Hi Isabella!

Yes it is, to be honest we did not see many camper vans, but you can do it in most of the locations, just double check you will apply for a place that is not in the middle of the mountain, you can easily do it checking in google maps.

  3. Hi there! I'm planning to go to Madeira in February/March and I was wondering if you know if the free campsites are accessible all year around. Since I can't find anything online about it... and is Camping Porto Moniz also open all year around? Just asking around since I can't find anything online about it! Thanks:)

    1. Hi Lisa! Campings are open and accessible all year round, some of them are just campsites into the forest or the mountain so they do not have people guarding them. In the case of Porto Moniz Camping I bet it's open all year round, it's the only one you pay for so there is always a nice guy taking care of everything. It is also a popular one due to the perfect location so you will always find people there, I recommend it 100% 🙂

    1. Hi hello!
Maybe you know if the camping in Porto Moniz also has tents and any camp staff to give for use( to rent) ? Or everything has to be brought with me? This year is also 7 e per night? Thanks!
Last year I stayed in the free camping and it was very hard without water 💦 and toilet.
This year I would like to go to the camping with water and toilet -:)))

      1. Hi Lada! They do not rent or sell the tents, regarding the price it might have changed however I don't have any updated information about it 🙂 This camping is amazing, the views are incredible and also there is water, toilet and showers all included.
