Exploring Madeira's Natural Pools
Discover Madeira's natural pools in June, the perfect time to escape the crowds, enjoying cheap flights and an ideal climate. These natural formations that emerged from the earth over a hundred million years ago, offer a free shelter (most of the times) that will allow you to connect with the essence of Madeira.
Porto Moniz Natural Pools
They are the most popular natural pools of Madeira. Located in the northwest coast and formed from volcanic rock. They are famous and it shows, you will often find yourself sharing a bath with other travelers. Even out of high season. But that popularity is well deserved.
The pools are open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the months of summer, while in the winter close at 17:00. The entrance fee is 1,50 euros per person.

Also, if your idea is to camp on the island, don't hesitate to visit them. Driving 10 minutes by car you will find Camping Park Do Porto Moniz. You can read more about this campsite in the article on the best camping sites in Madeira.
Piscinas Naturais Velhas
To the east of Porto Moniz you will find other less popular natural pools of Madeira formed by volcanic rock as well. These are less modernized and their infrastructure can be improved. In any case worth a visit as well. The rock formations are larger than in Porto Moniz and in the background you can see the Ilhéu Mole lighthouse.
The Natural Pools of Seixal
The Seixal pools are located in the north of the island. They are in my point of view the best option among the natural pools of Madeira, large and free.
The tranquility of these pools contrasts with the popularity of Porto Moniz. Here you will be able to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and a 24-hour schedule. This will allow you to see one of the best sunrises on the island if you get up early.
Best of all, the facilities include restrooms, stair access and even a small bar. In addition, there is a space in the main pool to sunbathe quietly, as you can see in the following picture.

Natural Pools of Madeira: Doca do Cavacas
These natural salt water pools of Maderia are located at about 12 minutes drive from Funchal. So if in your case you do not have much time to stay in Madeira, this could be the best option in terms of natural pools.
The entrance fee is about 6,5 euros including umbrella and hammock. There is also a canteen, but the food is fairly standard.
The sunset in Doca do Cavacas is one of the most beautiful of the whole island. This photo was taken just in in front of Praia Formosa. If you are going to spend the day my recommendation is not to miss the spectacular sunset of this beach.
Natural Swimming Pools in Madeira: Lido
Like Doca do Cavacas, these natural pools of Madeira are located in about 10 minutes drive from Funchal. Access is very easy, but finding parking and avoiding tourists is something that will be more complicated.
It could be said that more than natural pools are bathing space enabled to the public. They do not have visible and spectacular rock formations as the other pools but they have two main advantages:
- They are free of charge
- They are perfect for diving
Calhau de S. Jorge Spa Complex
These natural pools of Madeira are located in the north of the island, about 50 minutes from Funchal.
Access is free of charge as long as you consume something at the restaurant of the entrance. In my opinion it is worth it, as the food is varied and of good quality.
They are freshwater, and they have a depth of more than 5 meters, so they are perfect if you want to jump from the rocks.
