The Natural Pools of Seixal: A Hidden Gem

The natural pools of Seixal in Madeira are one of the most incredible collection of natural volcanic lava pools, perfect for swimming and exploring. With plenty of giant rocks, caves and pools to discover, this free attraction , is something you can't miss if you visit Madeira.

Where are located the Natural Pools of Seixal?

Natural pools of Seixal are located in the northern part of Madeira. It is only 43 km from Funchal by car, which is the main city of the island. I suggest you to visit other nearby attractions such as Seixal beach. You can also visit the swimming pools of Porto Moniz or the Miradouro do Veu da Noiva.

In the following map you can see exactly where the pools of Seixal are located.

Access to the Seixal Natural Pools

As with many of Madeira's attractions, Seixal's swimming pools are free of charge. It is important to mention that there are free bathrooms, a small bar poolside and stairs to access them, something we did not expected at all.

My Experience in Natural Pools

We arrived at the Natural Pools in the morning, after spending the night camping on the mountains. Being located in the northern part of the island, this area is ideal for watching the sunrise. Also, if you go early, you will most likely have the pools to yourself.

When we arrived at the natural pools of Seixal, we parked on the main road. Right next to the entrance to the pools. Once we parked, we went down the slope leading to the pools and found only a few people. The water was very calm and the sun was already coming out.

My favorite part of Seixal is the arched rock. It is amazing to think how these shapes were created by volcanic activity thousands of years ago.

To swim in the Natural Pools of Seixal, you can choose between different pools with different sizes. As I always recommend, if the water is calm, there is nothing to fear, but if there are waves you should be cautious when approaching the edges. Note that there are no lifeguards in these pools.

For a full experience, I recommend bring snorkeling equipment and a camera. If you like cliffjumping don't hesitate to jump from the rocks. There is a perfect 10 meter jump from the deepest part of the largest pool.

If you are used to the Mediterranean you will notice that the water is a little cold, but it's not a big deal, you will enjoy like a little kid.

Most of the pools are in the main location, but if you go down the coast you can find other less popular volcanic pools.
